Scholarly Publishing Resources

The following publishers have established means to cover publication charges for Muhlenberg authors.  See each entry below for specific details, and contact us with any questions.

American Chemical Society

Beginning in 2023 the article publication charges are covered for Muhlenberg corresponding authors to publish their article Open Access in ACS Open Access and hybrid journals. Muhlenberg authors that are collaborating with researchers from another organization that does not participate in an ACS Open Access publishing agreement may act as the submitting corresponding author to qualify for this program. Please confirm with the co-authors and reach out to rachelhamelers@muhlenberg.edu or pennylochner@muhlenberg.edu. The current agreement applies to articles accepted Jan. 2023 through Dec. 2025.

Springer, Palgrave Macmillan, Adis, Springer Nature Academic

Beginning in 2024 the article publication charges are covered for Muhlenberg corresponding authors to publish their article Open Access in Hybrid journals under these imprints: Springer, Palgrave Macmillan, Adis, and Springer Nature Academic (not Nature Portfolio). The current agreement applies to articles accepted Jan. 2024 through Dec. 2027.

Types of OA Publishing

As an author, it is important to understand the conditions under which your work is published, and the restrictions (if any) on its reuse and sharing.

Gold
Under a Gold OA agreement, the content will be made freely accessible upon publication on the publisher's website. The content is typically licensed for sharing and reuse via Creative Commons licenses. A variety of funding models are used to support gold OA publishing.

Hybrid
A hybrid publication (usually a journal or book) contains a mixture of open access and closed access articles or chapters on the publisher's website. "Closed access" means payment is required for access. Open access is funded by an article/chapter processing fee. Authors without coverage for the OA fee may publish without a fee under the traditional subscription/purchase model (and possibly self-archive their article/chapter).

Green
Refers to an author self-archiving their published article in an open access repository. The author's agreement with the publisher must permit self-archiving. Some agreements have restrictions regarding which version of the article, for example, the author's accepted manuscript, can be self-archived. Examples of open access repositories include Muhlenberg College Digital Repository and arXiv.

Subscribe-to-Open (S2O)
This model of open access publishing relies on subscription payments to fund OA publication. When total subscriptions meet funding targets, published content is switched from subscription to open access. There are no publication charges for authors. Examples: Annual Reviews, Project MUSE S2O journals
