Special Collections: The Muhlenberg Weekly

The United States entered World War I in April 1917, and Muhlenberg responded immediately. During the ensuing years the College served as Student Army Training Corp camp.

In May, 1942, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt attended the bicentennial celebration of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg's arrival in America. A mere six months after the Pearl Harbor attack, the celebration included the dedication of the statue of General John Peter Muhlenberg, whose military service was used as inspiration for over 2000 Muhlenberg students and alumni who would serve in World War II.

Muhlenberg exploded onto the national basketball scene in the mid-1940s by making three consecutive appearances in the National Invitation Tournament — at the time the biggest postseason college basketball tournament — at Madison Square Garden, finishing fourth in 1946. The Mules won four consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference North titles from 1946-50.
